La Zagaleta Golf Malaga Spain

If there's one thing the Costa del Sol has remained famous for over the years, it is for luxurious living. Pushing the bounds of this concept is Club de Campo La Zagaleta. Situated on a hillside just inland from the coast the views afforded from La Zagaleta Golf Malaga Spainthis exquisite development are some of the most spectacular you are ever likely to set eyes upon. This residential Country Club sprawls over some 200 acres of pristine Andalucían countryside sandwiched between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains and with good road connections to both Málaga and Gibraltar International airports. Each residence is carefully planned and designed to ensure maximum privacy with most properties built to not much more that ten percent of their plot size. With plots starting at 100 million pesetas and with completed villas selling from 300 million pesetas La Zagaleta is obviously not for everyone but for some La Zagaleta has become one of the most prestigious addresses in Europe....we went to find out why.

The location of the project is of course hard to better and added to this is the important issue of security, an important factor if you are spending upwards of 300 million pesetas on your home. Security is a big deal here; no entrance is granted unless you have a prior appointment with either the sales office or a private resident and armed guards stand watch over the two entrances. Closed circuit TV cameras are in evidence throughout the grounds - inconspicuously of course.

The villas themselves are all spaced well apart providing a solitary "close to nature" feel but with the reassuring knowledge that you are living within the confines of a secure environment. Great care has been taken during every phase of construction and continuing building still ensures that local flora and fauna is disturbed as little as possible. It is not unusual to see fallow deer, bucks, pheasant and Hispanic goats wandering around amongst the cork oaks, conifers, olive trees, madroñas and rock rose bushes and the three lakes are stocked with fish where residents can fish for trout and other stocks provided by the Country Club.

The Country Club, offers Zagaleta's discerning clients an eighteen-hole golf course designed by Brandford Benz of California. Benz has managed to combine the local topography with the 6,000 metres of perfect fairways and greens to create a course which blends effortlessly with its surroundings. There is also a world class driving range with professional instruction at hand. An equestrian centre with space for twenty horses (both privately owned and club owned) is available to club members with instruction on hand for all ages and abilities. Membership is, incidentally, only open to those who own property within La Zagaleta.

The clubhouse itself covers over 5,000 m2 and boasts a pro-shop, a restaurant offering superb local and international cuisine, several bars, a library, billiard room, function room and even a bowling alley and traditional Spanish bodega. Other club facilities are tennis courts ( clay and hard surface), swimming pools and a pistol gallery.

As well as all the club facilities, La Zagaleta also provides a long list of services to its elite community of residents. On hand are a whole army of Zagaleta employees to perform a myriad of tasks; from paying your bills to landscaping your garden and from handling your laundry and cleaning requirements to arranging your insurance, nothing has been overlooked here - there are even banking facilities on site.

Someone once said of the golf course at La Zagaleta: "Never could so few enjoy so much". This, one feels, rings true of the entire place - I have never seen such opulence. The palatial villas are all built tastefully and blend with the peaceful environment; the facilities of the Country Club are simply superb; the golf course is a golfers dream and the surrounding area a nature lover's paradise. With its own helipad, there is no doubt that the place is only for the chosen few but, for those few, there is not much that could compete with the pure pedigree of the Club de Campo La Zagaleta.
